Detailed rules

The Decathlon is a speedrun challenge.

It consists in learning 10 speedruns from February 2nd to May 19th and participating in tournaments (on this website), restreamed in French on Twitch de l'Ultime Décathlon and in English on one of Speedgaming Twitch channel, to possibly qualify for the Ultimate Final, last tournament of UD7, live at the Stunfest. Most of the information is provided on Discord

BASICS

Learn 10 speedruns with the community, submit your times on the website leaderboard, and participate with other runners in organized races or tournaments. Each game has specific rules that can be found in the resources. Record your speedruns and submit your best times as you go. You must register in advance for tournaments. The information for streaming is in the resources. Every Saturday, the tournaments of the week are announced (in the evening on weekdays, and in the afternoon on weekends, CET), as well as the weekly achievements, missions to be completed to collect the stars on your player profile.

PARTICIPATION RULES

The Ultimate Decathlon is free and open, everyone can participate. When you exceed 100 points on a game, your runs must be recorded (with OBS, for example), locally or on Twitch, and if possible uploaded to YouTube. The related tools are also free of charge and the relevant technical details will be provided on the website. The players and organizers are also here to help you! It is essential to be able to stream for tournaments. When you complete a run, simply submit it to the website. The time will then be validated by a moderator, and your score will appear on the championship.

Speedruns must be done on the correct versions of the games, following the specific rules of each event.

Scoring system

UD7 is based on a points system made to reflect the level of players on the complete collection of games:

Each game has a maximum time above which the speedrun will score no points at all. (We encourage you to submit these times on the website anyway!).

Between 1 and 100 points, the points follow a logarithmic rule. Therefore, you need to save more time to go from 1 to 2 points than to go from 99 to 100 points.

Above 100, each point corresponds to a gain of 3, 6 or 9 seconds depending on whether the world record at the start of the season is short, intermediate or long. 200 points is used as an easy to remember rounded value, chosen so that the world record at the start of UD is generally between 210 and 220 points.

There is no point limit, meaning that if a WR is achieved, a player could theoretically get any score. No re-calibration will be done, even though there will certainly be possible score disparities, with games where all players could exceed 200 points and others where it is unthinkable for most to exceed 180 points, for example. This has no impact on rankings and tournament results.

Submit a personal best (PB)

For PBs achieved during grinding sessions (meaning: personal training for speedrunning), as soon as you get a new PB (made during the season, between February 2nd and the end of May), submit it on the website so that the ranking remains up to date. Submissions are validated by the organizers.

As for PB made during races (races must be created and initiated by the race bot present on UD's Discord): they must be submitted manually by the runners. If this time is better than the PB done during grinding sessions, both times will be updated simultaneously.

In the case of the Decathlon PB, it is a matter of completing the 10 games in a row! You must complete the games entirely, in any desired order. Setup times between each game does not count towards the final time, but should not exceed 5 minutes. To submit, it is recommended to time everything, with 10 separate splits for the 10 games, and 9 setup splits (one between each game), then deduct the duration of these splits to find the final time. Games in this category are all counted in real time.

In short : Submit your PB on all games until the end of UD!

Tournaments

The UD7 tournaments are there to promote races among players, commented and streamed live. Every Saturday, the tournaments of the week will be announced. They will take place in the evening (from 8pm, CET) on weekdays, and in the afternoon or evening during weekends.

Runners must be registered before the start of the tournaments in order to participate. It is impossible to add a latecomer once a tournament has started. Broadcasts of the official tournaments will go through UD's server, you will find in the resources section details on how to appear on the main stream.

Race starts will be given on Discord, in specific channels under the category #live-races. Runners will have to submit on the website their race time, in the tournament tab.

Stars will reward the best players during tournaments:

  • A gold star will reward a first place
  • A silver star for 2nd and 3rd place
  • A bronze star for the rest of the top 10
  • The black stars will reward the best players of the fun tournaments: with different categories from the usual ones of the UD7, for example increased difficulty, team tournaments, etc.

A selection of runners will be streamed live on one of Speedgaming Twitch channel, each stream will feature 4 players. Runners can request to be streamed via this form. The idea is to stream as many different runners as possible during the events, so don't hesitate, whatever your level is. However, it is required to play all the games in the tournament if you are willing to do so.

Achievements and Arrows

Achievements are an important part of the progress made in the UD7: a document is provided to the runners to view and fill in their achievements.. Every week, quests will be added. Runners are trusted to indicate whether the achievements have been completed. If an achievement is already validated before, it is obviously considered as already done by the runner. Weekly achievements will also be included in the overall achievements list, so for the most determined, you can obviously validate everything even if you miss a week during the season! Weekly achievements will be more in a discovery approach at the beginning, to encourage players to try all the games. The achievements and tournament schedules will be announced at the same time and will try to follow a common logic (games, target times and categories will be generally akin to each other).

Completing all the achievements of a week will give a white star on players cards.

For each game, the arrow will be given when the score exceeds 203 points, the double arrow when it reaches 206!

About emulators

All games in the UD are played on a PC for cost and accessibility reasons. If you have the original console (and the correct version of the game) and you have the ability to capture your gameplay, you can play on the original console.

For emulators, it is mandatory to only use those explicitly allowed in the detailed rules for each games.

It is forbidden to use a turbo controller and make macros. Key bindings must follow this simple rule: one key per action, one action per key. Example: the A button on the NES controller must correspond to a single key on your controller, and this key on your controller must not be associated with any other key on the NES controller.

Communication between players and the organizers

All the information is transmitted through the website. There is also an open Mumble server that all participants are encouraged to join. The UD is essentially based on its community, do not hesitate to ask questions, interact on Discord, Mumble and Twitch! The event gets its visibility from twitch, so don't hesitate to stream your progress as well!

Be sure to get all the information from the site first. Especially in resources. One of the most critical is the schedule, with weekly details of all the streams and tournaments that are planned.

Android app

You can find the UD android app made by Butters Dickinson on Google Play or install it without source repository by downloading the apk

There may be a delay to adapt it to the new seasons. There is no version available for IOS at the moment.

Code of conduct

Code of conduct:

We want our community to be as respectful as possible, so that viewers can watch our streams and our participants be integrated into the community, without feeling disturbed or shocked by the behavior or vocabulary used. In the work environment as on the Internet, certain behaviors or words convey certain relationships of domination (reflecting a factually unequal society) or are in themselves discriminatory. The Ultime Décathlon should not be "like elsewhere", but "better than elsewhere", and for that reason we invite you to become aware of a certain number of problems and to make efforts to overcome them. We also know that many members of the community are already sensitive to these issues.

Concerning behaviors, we have nothing to complain about at the moment. However, we prefer to take the lead by specifying that every participants are expected to maintain a friendly environment and to be respectful of others and their differences. We cannot forbid taunt or trash talk but we would like to remind you that it has to happen with the acceptance of those concerned: make sure that others accept the way you approach them. To keep the overall atmosphere pleasant for everyone, it is better to encourage and support each other rather than to denigrate others. The Ultime Décathlon must remain an event of conviviality and surpassing oneself. Even if the competition has an important place in the event, it must remain strictly within a playful environment, where cheating and harsh rivalry have no place.

Regarding vocabulary, we noticed the use of oppressive and violent terms. We focus on oppressive language, not oppressive people. It is not because you are not disturbed by your own remarks that others are not: sexism, racism, transphobia, homophobia, validism, psychophobia, rape culture... Discriminating remarks must stay in the private sphere and have no place whatsoever on Mumble, Discord, nor on the Ultime Décathlon stream or chat. We encourage you to apply the same rules to your streams.

We hope to be heard and understood and we thank you for your efforts to maintain a pleasant and respectful environment. For those who do not follow this Code, measures/sanctions will be taken and may go as far as the definitive exclusion of the Ultime Décathlon. If you have any problems with any of the participants, or if you have any comments about the Code of Conduct, please contact the team.
